What the Bible Says About Forgiveness

Forgiveness

We all experience moments in life when we need forgiveness. We’re either the ones who have been hurt and should extend forgiveness to someone, or we’re the ones in need of forgiveness. Whatever you’re walking through, here are some truths from God’s Word to remember when you find yourself struggling with forgiveness.

Declare these words over your life and trust that there is forgiveness for you and help for you when you find it hard to extend grace to those who have hurt you.

Let’s begin with the “Lord’s Prayer,” which can help us renew and realign our hearts and minds with the Father. This was the framework for prayer Jesus gave to His disciples and followers in the Sermon on the Mount.

Remember, we are all in need of our Savior who helps us in the areas we need Him most. Declaring this prayer helps us reflect on the love and forgiveness He gives us, so we can in return give it to others.

Our Father in heaven, may Your name be kept holy. May Your kingdom come soon.  May Your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.  Give us today the food we need, and forgive our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us. And don’t let us yield to temptation but rescue us from the evil one. – Matthew 6:9-13

Here are some more truths from God’s Word to remember when you find yourself struggling with forgiveness.

1.  “If you forgive those who sin against you, your Heavenly Father will forgive you.  But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.” – Matthew 6:14-15

2. “If we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.” – 1 John 1:9

3. “Make allowance for each other’s faults and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.” – Colossians 3:13

4. So we praise God for the glorious grace He has poured out on us who belong to His dear Son. He is so rich in kindness and grace that He purchased our freedom with the blood of His Son and forgave our sins.” – Ephesians 1:6-7

5. “Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.” – Ephesians 4:31-32

6. “Then Peter came to him and asked, ‘Lord, how often should I forgive someone who sins against me? Seven times?’ ‘No, not seven times,’ Jesus replied, ‘but seventy times seven!’” – Matthew 18:21-22
