Just Doing, Doing, Doing
Every Monday morning, without fail, I get asked the same question by a group of people that I work with: "What did you do this weekend?" If you're like me, this question is followed by a pause. Then you think, and then you just start listing out all of the to-dos that you did over the weekend to catch up on your week.
Before long, you start to realize that your weekends sound just as exhausting as your week. God doesn't want us to burn out by just doing, doing, doing. God wants us to rest.
Our Verse of the Day is a song that was written to be sung on the Sabbath, the day that was appointed for God's people to slow down and rest. If you're having trouble making margin to settle your heart, be encouraged by our verse today.
Psalm chapter 92, verse 2 says, "It is good to proclaim Your unfailing love in the morning, Your faithfulness in the evening."
I will be the first to admit that I give my weekends away so fast and so easily. I wake up Saturday, and it's just go time. We've got sports practices, we've got errands, we've got chores, we've got house projects. It feels like even in the moments where I have time to slow down, I feel guilty, and I just want to keep going and I want to keep doing.
Bookending Our Days
How do we protect ourselves from this mindset? Our Verse of the Day gives us a really good place to start: bookending our days with focused time and attention on the Lord. The psalm tells us that it is good to proclaim God's unfailing love in the morning and His faithfulness in the evening.
I mean, just think about this practically. How many times do you wake up on a Saturday morning, and the first thing you do is grab your phone and start checking notifications, and then you jump into your day? By the end of it, you're exhausted, and you just plop down onto the couch. You pull your phone out, and you start the doom scroll all over again.
This is a great place to start to build rest into our schedules. I want to challenge you to do this: the first thing that you do in the morning, just sit with the Lord. Consider His love for you—all the ways that He's proven His love, all the ways that He's showing it now. Before you get too tired at the end of the day,
I want you to look back and reflect on all the ways that God has been faithful in your life and in the lives of the people around you. I would be shocked if, in starting to form this rhythm, you didn't find that the moments between the start and the end also filled up with more focused attention on the Lord.
Enter Into His Rest
When we start and end our days this way, our minds start to center around what God is doing in our lives. Don't burn yourself out. Don't just go, go, go, go. God wants to be with us. Enter into that Sabbath rest. Make margin for what matters most. Reflect on His love. Reflect on His faithfulness.
In those moments, your soul will find true rest in the arms of our Savior.
