A Job That Requires Attention
If you've ever been in charge of keeping track of a count, or something that just keeps changing, you know it's significant to have to pay attention or put something in place so you can constantly navigate those changes. You have to pay attention to it to make sure it's accurate and you know exactly what's going on.
Something similar to that is our hair. Some of us pay more attention to our hair than others, and that's okay. I love this fact—according to the American Academy of Dermatology, most people naturally shed 50 to 100 strands of hair per day. You're probably wondering where we're going with this, but bear with me.
50 to 100 strands is what we lose per day. The average scalp has over 100,000 follicles, so losing that amount per day represents only .1% of all the hair we have. You're probably wondering why in the world we're talking about this. Well, it fits perfectly through the lens of today's Verse of the Day.
It comes from Luke chapter 12, verse 7. It says, "'And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.'"
That's why I was mentioning the hair. As He brings in the sparrows, because He talks about them in the context of this passage, He says that God knows when even one sparrow falls to the ground.
Sparrows Are Everywhere
I'm sure you've observed sparrows. We have a sparrow nesting in one of our planters out on our front porch. We have another sparrow nesting in our back area on our deck. Sparrows are all over the place. If we had a bald eagle building a nest in one of our planters, that would be newsworthy. A sparrow, they're all over the place. That's just like our hair—we don't really pay attention to it unless we start developing a bald spot, right? All of a sudden it's like, oh no, I'm losing more than what I'm gaining. I'm developing a bald spot now. Then we start paying attention.
Details We Overlook, God Doesn't
Before that, we probably don't pay attention to what hair we're losing or gaining until something like that happens. How amazing is this verse—something that we don't actually pay attention to until it develops into a problem, or what we deem to be a problem, God actually pays attention to all of the details, even to the number of hairs on your head. That's just crazy, especially when we're talking about sparrows that are all over the place. We're not talking about something rare or hard to see. Even when there's a plethora of sparrows, He knows when one falls to the ground.
Imagine the significance of knowing this fact that Jesus is saying, and relate that to something even more significant going on in your life right now—something you think maybe God doesn't hear, doesn't know about, or doesn't care about. I would just encourage you with this verse. Jesus Himself is talking about how much He cares and how much He knows about you, to greater detail than we even know about ourselves.
He Knows What You're Going Through
Whatever complicated situation, whatever is going on in your life that you can't navigate or don't know how to navigate—just know that if God knows the details of the count of the hair on your head and cares about the sparrow, He cares about what you're going through right now. He understands. He knows the details behind it.
Because He cares so much, because He knows that much detail—more than, quite frankly, most of us care to know. A lot of people may not care how many hairs specifically they have on their head, but God knows and God cares. If He cares that much, how much more does He care about the bigger things you're going through today?
I would just ask you to trust Him with it, knowing He cares even about the details, the small things. Bring those to Him today.
