A World That Won't Stop Changing
In a world that is constantly changing around us, this verse is as encouraging as it could be. It gives us something solid to stand on, and that is that Jesus Christ does not change. He's the same yesterday, today, and forever. I want you to think about what changes in your life.
The answer is probably everything. Everything changes. People change. The weather changes. Your circumstances change. Your emotions change. Your opinions change. Your health might change. Your friendships change. But there is one thing that never changes, and that is Jesus Christ. That means that the same Jesus who has shown you mercy before will show you mercy again. That means the same Jesus who was patient with you and has been faithful will still be faithful to you and will still be patient with you.
That means the same Jesus who has saved you and has kept you until now will continue to save you and will continue to keep you.
Does He Change When I Do?
It's not dependent on anything, because we might wonder, will Jesus change? Will His disposition toward me change because I change a lot? There's a song that we sing that says, "My love often grows cold."
If we're honest, that's true. My love for others, and even my love for God, is not always as warm as it sometimes is. Sometimes it's cool and cold and I'm distant. Does that mean that Jesus is going to pull back? Does that mean He's not going to be as gracious and merciful? Does that mean He's not going to keep me?
Of course, the answer is—and this verse reminds us—absolutely not. He's the same yesterday, today and forever. JC Ryle said, "Always the same, unchanging—that is a glorious character." Jesus is not unpredictable. He is not unstable. He is not moody. He is not one thing described in Scripture, but something different when you are suffering; the Jesus you read about on the pages is the Jesus in your life.
Anchored to the Bedrock
That matters so deeply for the Christian life, because all of these changes that happen. Imagine you're a ship. Life is like waves in the ocean, and you're tossed this way and tossed that way. In Hebrews, Christ is described as our anchor. If there's an anchor, that means I'm not going to be tossed onto these rocks over here. I would be if I wasn't anchored, but I'm anchored to Christ, and He is the bedrock. He never changes.
The question is not whether or not things are going to change in your life. They most certainly will. The question is whether you are anchored to Christ, who will never change.
If you're growing weary, remember our verse today.
