Less than a month ago, a devastating flood hit a wide area of Nepal, with thousands of lives lost and leaving tens of thousands more homeless.
Water Mission responded within days, sending a team of engineers to provide emergency safe drinking water for communities of internally displaced people. Many of these communities are gathered in and around schools, hospitals, police stations, and other public places.
Our team is working closely with the government and has an encouraging update to share in the short video below, yet there are still immense needs.
Our team is in Bidur, where people are slowly recovering and have access to power now, yet there is still no access to running water. There are empty storage tanks scattered throughout the region, with no one currently able to fill them. Our Water Mission disaster response team is adapting to the quickly changing situation on the ground and plans to begin trucking water from our four distribution points to some of the empty water tanks. This will allow us to serve even more people with treated, safe water.
To date, our team has:
- Set up 4 water treatment systems that have produced nearly 30,000 liters of safe water to date and are each serving between 350-950 people each day. That number will increase once we start trucking water.
- A 5th system (at the army camp) is still in process.
- We've purchased 500 jerry cans to support water collection and began distributing to people in the region.
