Christian music supergroup Sons Of Sunday is serving up its brazen offering, “God Did!,” to Christian radio. The star-studded collective — comprised of Steven Furtick, Brandon Lake, Chandler Moore, Elevation Worship’s Chris Brown, Leeland Mooring and Pat Barrett — was organically birthed when the six leading songwriters booked studio time in a historic church to record some songs that had never found a home on any of their respective projects.
The result is a 12-track, self-titled LP that boasts co-writing credit and shared lead vocals from all six members. A truly collaborative effort, “Sons Of Sunday” is full of vulnerable, left-of-center originals that don’t necessarily fit the congregational fare these chart-topping lyricists are widely known for, yet still serve the Church with transparent writing and bold, experimental sonic elements.
“God Did!” delivers the ambitious endeavor’s lead single. A moody, Gospel-inflected anthem, “God Did!” finds the group reflecting on God’s perfect timing, not only across history but also throughout the details of our lives. Furtick, recognized more for his songwriting than his singing, helms surprisingly fierce lead vocals alongside Lake’s signature growl; while Moore and Brown briefly contribute their vocals as well. It’s the outfit’s collective gang vocals, however, that really steal the show and elevate the song to the next level.
Although a Sons Of Sunday tour looks doubtful, considering the demanding schedules of those involved, Lake and Barrett — who are currently on tour together via Lake’s “King of Hearts” outing — have been performing several selections from the Sons Of Sunday debut as they visit a slew of arenas across the country this fall. Additionally, Moore recently showed up at an “Elevation Nights” tour stop, joining Brown and Elevation Worship for a surprise live rendition of “God Did!”
Beyond the powerful lyrics and the expansive melody, “God Did!” welcomes fans into the authentic brotherhood created by Sons Of Sunday. Aside from their natural camaraderie, their collective talent is unparalleled with 12 GRAMMY® wins, numerous GMA Dove Awards and countless hits to their name, including “Hard Fought Hallelujah,” “Praise,” “Graves Into Gardens,” “Trust In God,” “When Wind Meets Fire” and “This Is Our God,” among other well-known cuts.
