Have you ever seen the trust game? I saw this game in college. You're supposed to put your hands out, and people stand behind you and you're supposed to close your eyes and fall backward, and they're supposed to catch you. Well, I'll never forget. I saw a person who did this, and they'd never seen the game before. They put their hands out, and the people said, okay, fall, and the person fell forward.
Think about this. Trust is an incredibly important truth that you and I should personalize in our life. Our K-LOVE Verse of the Day really hits this whole issue of trust. Isaiah chapter 26 verse 4 says,
Trust in the LORD always, for the LORD GOD is the eternal Rock.
The Call to Trust
Israel is now giving praise. Isaiah is giving praise for Israel right now. As we look at this passage in Isaiah chapter 26, he's talking about, again, the importance of trust. Just two critical areas that you and I are to trust God in. The first one very simply, is the call to trust. He says it right there. Trust in the Lord always. Lean on and trust in Him. Trust, faith, believe— you can use those as synonyms, but what are the things that we trust in? I'd like to say that I trust the Lord in a lot of areas, but if I'm really honest, there's several things that replace my trust in God. Maybe you do that, too. Do you know why I do that? It's because I want control. It's hard for me to let somebody else, or even God, control my life. But this passage, again, is very simply a call to trust in the Lord.
The Person of Trust
Secondly, this critical component is very simply this—it’s the person of trust. See, this is why it's hard for us to sometimes trust, because we don't trust the person. We don't trust the circumstance. We don't trust whatever it might be. Here, God calls us to trust in Himself. He's the person of trust. It is absolutely legitimate for Him to say, look, I need you to trust in Me. He says, trust in the Lord always, for the Lord God is the eternal rock.
I think about the times when we don't trust. You might feel fear, anxiety, worry, a gurgling stomach, or you might breathe hard. Whatever it might be, it's so easy and natural to worry and fret. Somebody once said fretting comes from forgetting God, but here He says to trust Me. I love what He says at the end of the verse.
Trust in the Lord, for the Lord God is the eternal rock. I've been to California. I've seen these incredible redwood trees. You can go up to them, try to push them. They're not going anywhere. Right? I've also been to Yosemite, and I've seen Half Dome. I've seen all these huge rocks. They are going nowhere, and God made them out of nothing.
That God is the One who says, you can trust Me with your life. Once in a while I think—when we get to heaven, there's going to be this moment of, oh my word, God. I never realized how big and amazing and incredible You really were, and we're going to be feeling that forever.
Practical Steps for Trust
As we look at this passage, let me close it out with a couple of thoughts about trust. Number one, memorize verses about trust. A classic one is Proverbs chapter 3 verses 5 and 6.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths.
Lean not. It's a strong not in the Hebrew language. Lean not on your own understanding. Your own understanding means being clever, trying to do it your own way, controlling your circumstances, worrying, or fretting. In all your ways, acknowledge Him, one version says. It can literally mean know God. The reason we worry, sometimes, is because we don't know God well enough. In all your ways know Him, and He will direct your path.
He loves you, He's right beside you, and He wants you to walk with Him and know that He’s got you. This is a small thing, but recently I lost the keys to my lawnmower. I looked all around the yard for a few minutes. Finally yesterday I was like, Lord, You know I'm serious about this. Please help me find my keys to my lawnmower. I walked through the gate. I looked on the side of the gate. I'm like, Lord, please. I don't want to walk everywhere. I turned around and I looked at the ground and there they were, right on the ground by my gate. It's a small thing, but I was really, really praying hard. As a matter of fact, my family kind of laughs at me because whenever we lose a wallet or keys or whatever it is, I just say, Lord of all keys, You know where every key is in the universe. I'm just trusting You. Please help me find my keys.
So here, very simply, memorize verses on trust. As you look at this passage, secondly, make your feelings follow your mind when it comes to trust. I like to think of a train. There's the locomotive, the train cars, and the caboose. The locomotive is your mind. Have the Word of God come into your mind, and the train cars and the caboose—your feelings—will follow. Let's be the type of people who trust God.
